Paint Correction process
The Service

What Paint Correction actually is.

Paint correction is the process of removing surface defects from a vehicle's clear coat using machine polishing. The clear coat — the outermost transparent layer of your car's paint — accumulates scratches, swirl marks, water spots, and oxidation over time. These defects scatter light rather than reflecting it, producing the dull, hazy appearance that is visible in direct sunlight.

Machine polishing uses a rotary or dual-action polisher with progressively less aggressive compounds and pads to remove a controlled, microscopic amount of the clear coat, levelling the surface and eliminating the defects. The result is paint that reflects light uniformly — which is what produces the depth and mirror quality you see on a well-maintained or freshly repainted vehicle.
Is This Right for You?

Is this service right for your car?

Paint correction is appropriate when you can see swirl marks under sunlight, when the paint looks dull or hazy despite regular washing, when your car has been through automatic car washes, or when you are preparing the vehicle for a ceramic coating (correction is required before any coating is applied — we will not apply a coating to paint with existing defects).

It is also appropriate before a private sale — professionally corrected paint photographs and presents significantly better than paint with visible swirling.
Who benefits from Paint Correction
The Process

How Paint Correction works.

01

Paint inspection

We assess the paint under a focused inspection light, measure paint thickness with a digital gauge, and determine which correction tier is appropriate. This happens before any work is agreed.

02

Safe wash & decon

Full decontamination before any machine is applied to the paint. Iron fallout, tar, and bonded contamination are removed so the polishing stage works on clean paint, not embedded grit.

03

Machine polish

Compound and polishing pad combinations are chosen to the defect level. We work panel by panel under inspection lighting, confirming the correction result before moving on.

04

Polish residue removal

All polish oils and residue are removed with an IPA wipe-down. The paint is now at its most exposed and ready for protection — or for delivery if protection was not included.

Common questions

Will paint correction permanently remove my swirl marks?
Yes — machine polishing physically removes a microscopic layer of the clear coat to level the surface and eliminate the defects. The swirl marks are gone, not filled or hidden. The result is permanent, provided the vehicle is maintained with safe-wash techniques going forward. Returning to automatic car washes or harsh wash methods will reintroduce swirling over time.
How do I know which correction tier I need?
We determine the correct tier when we inspect your vehicle — you do not need to decide in advance. Most vehicles fall into the 2-stage range. If the paint has only light swirling from otherwise careful maintenance, a 1-stage may be sufficient. Multi-stage is reserved for heavily defected paint where maximum correction is the goal. We confirm the recommendation and the cost before we begin.
Does paint correction thin the clear coat?
Yes — it removes a microscopic amount of clear coat material. We measure paint thickness before and monitor throughout. A well-executed correction removes a controlled amount that leaves the clear coat well within safe limits. This is why we track paint thickness and why we will not overcorrect paint that is already thin from prior polishing.
Should I add a ceramic coating after paint correction?
Yes — paint correction and ceramic coating are paired naturally. Once the paint is corrected and all polish residue is removed (IPA wipe-down), the surface is in its cleanest, most receptive state. Applying a ceramic coating at this point locks in the corrected finish and protects it going forward. We offer a combined service — enquire when booking.
How long will the result last?
The correction result itself is permanent — the defects removed are gone. How quickly new defects accumulate depends on your maintenance routine. With safe-wash techniques (two-bucket method, proper wash media, no automatic washes), a corrected finish can remain in excellent condition for years. A ceramic coating applied after correction provides additional protection.
